Église Notre Dame - Brissarthe
Notre-Dame church was built in the 11th century in pure Romanesque style. A witness to the Battle of Brissarthe, it stands on the banks of the River Sarthe in the heart of the Anjou Bleu region.
The church of Notre-Dame de Brissarthe, in Anjou, was built in the first half of the 11th century. It was built on the foundations of an earlier church (circa 9th century) and a Merovingian cemetery. It was here that Robert le Fort, ancestor of the Capetians, was murdered by the Normans in 866, during the Battle of Brissarthe. The bell tower was rebuilt in the 18th century, taking on the curious shape of a "swallow's beak".
