Église romane Notre-Dame
The Romanesque church of Notre-Dame l'Ancienne is one of the most beautiful Romanesque bell towers in Anjou.
Built at the end of the 11th century on the site of an ancient chapel, it was consecrated in 1096 by Pope Urban II, at the invitation of Pétronille de Chemillé, future abbess of Fontevraud Abbey. The Romanesque church of Notre Dame has been altered several times, but escaped destruction during the French Revolution.
Worth seeing:
- The triumphal arch
- The recently restored bell tower
- The many sculptures
- The paintings on the inside walls of the building, dating from the 12th century to the 19th century. These have recently been stripped of their 19th-century whitewash and offer a beautiful pictorial ensemble depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments.
