Château de Terre-Neuve

Château de Terre Neuve, a splendid 16th-century work of art, set in the heart of its extensive grounds, overlooking the town of Fontenay-le-Comte. Discover its alchemical fireplace, its suns gilded with the fine gold of Chambord, its ceilings...

Guided tour of the inhabited part of the Château de Terre Neuve, a listed historic monument built in 1580 by Nicolas Rapin, Provost of the French Constabulary and companion of King Henry IV. Octave de Rochebrune, a famous 19th-century engraver, added many embellishments. The famous writer George Simenon lived there from 1940 to 1943.
Since 2018, a museum on the history of the Château and Octave de Rochebrune has been open to the public in the outbuildings of the Château.
The château is renowned for its Alchemical fireplace, its coffered ceilings of carved stone, its wood panelling from the Château de Chambord, the gold-leaf suns from the bedroom of King Louis XIV, and the cabinet door of King François 1st.
You can admire paintings, furniture, collections and superb clothing from the 17th and 18th centuries. The château is privately owned and inhabited all year round.
