CHÂTEAU DE SAINTE-SUZANNE
Owned by the Lords of Beaumont, Viscounts of Maine, in the 11th century, the Château de Sainte-Suzanne went down in history when William the Conqueror made an unsuccessful attempt to seize it between 1083 and 1086.
It was a time when Maine attracted the covetousness of its powerful neighbours, the Dukes of Normandy and Anjou.Through a series of marriages, the château came into the possession of the Alençon family, whose heir at the end of the 16th century was King Henri IV. It was acquired by Guillaume Fouquet de la Varenne, State Councillor and Comptroller General of the Post Office, who had a new dwelling built.
Since 2009, this dwelling has housed a Centre for the Interpretation of Architecture and Heritage (CIAP), which presents the many facets of the heritage of the Pays d'art et d'histoire Coëvrons-Mayenne and, more broadly, the whole of the Mayenne département.
Keep temporarily inaccessible.
On-site services: WIFI, lift, shop, free hire of audio guides on request from the château reception.
Seminar room available for hire by prior arrangement: seats 100, equipped with screen, video projector, microphone.
