Château de Bourmont

Château de Bourmont has belonged to the same family since 1697, and is now inhabited by the 25th generation of descendants.

A former 15th-century stronghold on the Marches of Brittany, Bourmont Castle is situated 30 km south of Châteaubriant. It comprises a complex of buildings in a variety of styles. The old château, which was burnt down during the Revolution, was replaced by a neo-Gothic residence at the very end of the 19th century. The original entrance, comprising a gateway flanked by two pillars, a moat and two symmetrical Louis XIV-style gatehouses, dates from 1710.

Situated at the end of the east-west riding lane, this complex – listed as a Historic Monument – borders a much-used local path and stands as a beautiful architectural testament to the old road that once linked Candé to Freigné. It adds a particularly charming touch to the landscape and forms a complete architectural ensemble, characteristic of that era, just like the large outbuildings and the orangery in the kitchen garden, which were also built in the early 18th century.

Guided tours are available on request for groups of at least 20 people.
Guided tours for school groups (primary, secondary and sixth-form pupils) are available to raise pupils’ awareness of their local and historical heritage. A historical theme (the Middle Ages, the 18th century, the French Revolution, the 19th century) can be explored in depth with a history teacher who will take your pupils on a fascinating journey through time.

During European Heritage Days, tours of the park and the chapel are led by a member of the family (lasting approximately 1 hour)
