EGLISE DE L'ASSOMPTION - MEURCE

Built in the 12th century, the church originally had a single nave and a choir with a flat chevet.

Enlarged during the 16th and 17th centuries. the Church of the Assumption in Meurcé is remarkable for its magnificent furnishings.
The altarpieces in the choir are the work of the Mongendre family from Le Mans. Nicolas was an architect and sculptor and François a painter.
The tufa altarpiece on the high altar, depicting the Assumption, was sculpted by Jacques Bigot to Mongendre's designs.
The tabernacle and wooden stalls from the 17th century have been preserved. The wrought iron fence dates from the 18th century.
The oak altarpieces in the side chapels, originally polychrome, have been stripped but retain their fine craftsmanship.
At the entrance to the church is a carved wooden canopy placed just above the baptismal font.
