ABBAYE NOTRE DAME DE LA CHAUME

Eleventh-century ruins with its dovecote, landscaped fences demarcating the former parts of the abbey.

Foundations from the 11th century
The abbey of Notre-Dame de la Chaume is the main Benedictine settlement in Machecoul, of which there were at least five.
The monastery ceased to exist in 1767. The two oculi (the only remains of the abbey) in the wall illuminated the chapter house and gave direct access to the abbot's garden.
The dovecote at the centre of the Chaume estate is something of a symbol of the abbey. It is the most visible and best-preserved feature, but also the most recent, as it was built between the abbot's courtyard and the common courtyard at the beginning of the 18th century. It was previously located in the abbot's garden. It could house more than 600 pairs of pigeons.
It is open to the public.
