The only windmill left on the hillside, facing the sea, the Arzelier mill is still a witness for future generations to the use of renewable energy to produce quality flour, using very clever technologies such as the Berton system for the wings and the

Chronology of the mill :

Built in 1857 by Jean MICHAUD and bought in 1859 by Jean-Baptiste BRETAGNE (1837- 1895), the Arzelier mill is a low mill (around 7 metres high), equipped with rake-shaped wings lined with canvas, turning by skimming the ground. The mill's machinery consists of a single pair of millstones. It grinds wheat.
Around 1880, the mill was raised and fitted with a plank canopy (BERTON type) and a second pair of millstones.
After the Second World War, competition from industrial mills led to a gradual decline in activity.
The mill was closed down for good in 1957.
In 1990, the association "Les Amis du Moulin de l'Arzelier" was founded.
The mill is rendered watertight and airtight (the building is still sound and the machinery complete, which means it can be restored in good conditions).
Signature of a long lease for 50 years between the owner (Brigitte Bretagne) and the association.
The project is managed by the association.
Moulin classified as a "remarkable building".
2018: recognition as a building of general interest (a tax ruling for companies and individuals).

News from the mill :

On 15 November 2024, the Friends of the Arzelier Mill association inaugurated the installation of a new temporary cover (made of chestnut wood), an important moment in the progress of the project to restore this emblematic heritage of our region.
To date, the aim of the mill restoration project is to relaunch flour production. The programme will be spread over several years: repairing the beams, fitting the windows, restoring the motor shaft and the Berton-type spinning wheel and wings. However, the mechanical parts and grinding wheels are in good condition.

Events are also organised during the Journées du Petit Patrimoine et des Moulins in June and the Journées Européennes du Patrimoine in September.

To experience life at the mill in days gone by, meet Marcel Bretagne, former miller at l'Arzelier.
