Les écluses de Bazoin
The Bazoin hydraulic junction, a major site in the functioning of the Marais Poitevin
On the borders of three communes (Maillé, Damvix and La Ronde), this group of structures is a major site where three départements meet: Deux-Sèvres, Vendée and Charente-Maritime.It determines the hydraulic management of this wetland area.
The Bazoin site underwent successive improvements between 1855 and 1960 to modernise its impressive mechanisms.
The Sèvre Niortaise dam was built first. The water supply to the marsh is ensured by these structures, which maintain a constant water level.
Today, new techniques have replaced the use of human hands to operate these structures.
The reservoirs and water releases are controlled by radio systems and electronic soundings.
The Vélo Francette (a 600 km cycle route from Ouistreham to La Rochelle) passes through the Bazoin locks.
