Porte du château et les remparts
Discovering the remains of Chemillé castle
The first castle, built in 1030 by Peter I on the orders of Foulques Nerra to replace Saint-Pierre, soon became the centre of an important court. In the 12th century, the castle was destroyed and then rebuilt, losing its importance due to a lack of resident lords. The castle gate (identical to that at Montreuil-Bellay) dates back to the early 13th century. It has a curious beehive architecture and is topped by a sculpture depicting a man throwing stones at attackers: "Le bonhomme Chemillé". The place of the portcullis is still visible.
To discover the remains of the castle ramparts, follow the Coulée Verte trail. You'll be able to make out the corner of the fortress with its overhang. These ramparts were destroyed at the end of the Wars of Religion in the 16th century.
