Les remparts et la porte Beucheresse
The Porte Beucheresse is one of the gates, still visible, of the fortified enclosure built around Laval in the 13th century.
At the beginning of the 13th century, the growth of the town led it to equip itself with its own fortification system.More than 1,100 metres long, this enclosure was flanked by 27 towers and pierced by 3 carriage gates (including the Porte Beucheresse) and 2 postern gates.
In the 15th century, the town walls were rebuilt following the passage of the English, and a sentry walk on machicolations crowned the curtain walls.
The fortifications underwent considerable destruction during the major urban works of the 19th century.
The Porte Beucheresse, the Promenade Anne d'Allègre (built in the moat of the southern rampart) and the northern rampart (including the Tour Renaise) have been preserved.
