Château d'Ancenis
Classified as a historic monument, Ancenis castle stands facing the Loire. The fortress is one of Brittany's strongholds. Free admission to the park every day. Temporary exhibitions in the Renaissance Logis.
A castle in the Marches de Bretagne region, its strategic position exposed it to numerous sieges between the 12th and 16th centuries. The gatehouse, built at the end of the 14th and beginning of the 16th centuries, features a special defensive system: a drawbridge precedes the portcullis, in a covered gallery arranged in a chicane shape. The Renaissance dwelling, a residential development initiated by Claude 1er de Rieux and his wife Suzanne de Bourbon, was built around 1529. The courtyard façade features early Renaissance decoration, while the structure of the dwelling remains Gothic.
Between 2013 and 2015, the castle's Renaissance dwelling was restored. This involved consolidating the structures and restoring the openings and sculptures. Temporary exhibitions are now held here all year round.
Free access to the park every day from 8am to 9pm.
