Église Saint-Pierre de Montrelais
Saint Pierre Church boasts a large stained glass window dating from 1535, which is listed as a Historic Monument.
Come and discover Saint-Pierre church in Montrelais, with its Renaissance-style choir, and the large glass roof above the high altar, listed as a Monument Historique, well worth a visit. This 1535 stained-glass window depicting the Passion of Christ curiously includes historical figures from the period, including the Breton prelate Jean de Maure, François I, Charles V, Emperor of the Holy German Empire, who was the enemy of the King of France, and Soliman the Magnificent, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, his ally.
At the base of the stained glass window, all that remains of François Maure, Hélène de Rohan, his wife and their three children (no doubt the donor family) are their faces, the lower part having been amputated in the 19th century to make way for wood panelling.
The sumptuous colours of this Great Glass Window illuminate the choir of the church, where seventeenth-century frescoes featuring the coats of arms of the lordly families of Montrelais remain.
You can also admire the two altarpieces in the transept, listed as Historic Monuments.
The north altarpiece (left) is decorated with two statues representing Saint Celestin and Saint Roch, sculpted by Henri-Amilton Barrême, known as Barrême d'Ancenis in 1835, framing a Virgin and Child.
The south altarpiece (right) is decorated with two statues representing Saint Peter and Saint Stephen, sculpted by Henri-Amilton Barrême in 1835, framing a statue of Saint Joseph and the Christ Child.
