EGLISE SAINT-GENEREUX
The church of Saint-Généreux in the village of Le Girouard was built in 1900 and overlooks the River Ciboule.
Presentation of: EGLISE SAINT-GENEREUX
The original church, which probably dates back to the 11th century, was sacked by the fury of heretics in the last quarter of the 16th century. Thanks to his donations, Claude ROBERT, Lord of Chaon, had the building rebuilt in 1592.
A stone bearing a Latin inscription bears witness to this dark chapter in the parish's history. It was removed from this second church when it was demolished, and then replaced on the façade of a neighbouring house.
Although planning permission was granted in 1887, the current neo-Gothic church was built in 1900 to plans by Yonnais architect Joseph Libaudière (1855-1925) and inaugurated in 1905.
It has a Latin cross plan with a slightly projecting transept and a semicircular apse. The choir is to the west. The central part of the façade features a pointed portal with no tympanum, topped by a statue and an oculus. The whole is framed by two buttresses. The bell tower, with its geminated bays and high, polygonal, timber-framed spire, is an extension of the portal. The sides of the façade are rounded, each with two bays one above the other.
At the same time as the church was being built, the old cemetery adjoining its north side was moved across the street to its current location.
The church and sacristy were renovated in 2017. Objects related to worship are on display.
The statue of Saint-Généreux, patron saint of the parish, stands above the entrance portal.
