Presentation of: L'EGLISE NOTRE-DAME DU PORT

On the heights of Port-Joinville stands one of the two churches of the parish of St-Amand de l'Ile d'Yeu, the parish church of Notre Dame du Port, built between 1827 and 1829 and enlarged in 1887. Its curious bell tower, topped by a bulbous campanile, gives it an oriental air, evocative of the long-haul voyages of yesteryear. Three models of frigates hang from the nave's wooden ceiling, 19th-century ex-voto statues recalling sailors' devotion to Notre Dame, their patron saint. The left transept houses a monumental organ with 1,500 pipes, built in 1996.
