Abbaye Sainte Marie du Gué de Trizay
The 1st Cistercian abbey in the Vendée! Under restoration
The historian Léon CHAIGNE dates the foundation of the abbey to 1137 and its consecration to 15 August 1145. A daughter of Pontigny, Sainte Marie du Gué de Trizay was the first Cistercian abbey in the Vendée. The first known bishop was Jean de Trizay, who went on to help found the abbey of Notre Dame de Ré on the Ile de Ré between 1165 and 1170.Protection
The remains of the former abbey, including the former abbey church, the remains of the east wing of the conventual building, the 18th century building to the south and the floor of the former cloister, were listed by decree on 10 April 1989.
An association, "les festivités du Gué de Trizay", is responsible for organising the site.
