This ancient temple-like building houses a magnificent Italian-style theatre.

The Théâtre à l'Italienne in La Roche-sur-Yon is an iconic venue for live performance, which continues to host a varied cultural programme supported by the town, the Grand R national stage and local associations.

In January 1805, the Emperor Napoleon approved a plan to build a "comedy theatre" in the heart of the town, to be paid for by the municipality. However, due to a lack of funds, the theatre was not inaugurated until 1845, on the site of the former barracks of the First Empire. It replaced a temporary auditorium that had been installed in the Halles since 1811.

Like other neoclassical buildings in Yonn, the theatre's imposing façade features a peristyle with columns and pilasters, supporting an entablature and triangular pediment.

Inside, the Italian-style wooden auditorium is richly decorated. In 1888, the balconies were decorated with comedy masks, garlands of flowers and musical instruments, while the coffered ceiling alternated between representations of the Muses and bouquets of flowers, creating a unique atmosphere.

The Théâtre à l'Italienne remains a must-see venue for culture and heritage enthusiasts. The reception team will be happy to accompany you on curious visits outside of events and rehearsals.
