In 1868, Savenay lost its status as a sub-prefecture to Saint-Nazaire. However, in 1872 it was chosen as the location for the new Teacher Training College. The premises were inaugurated in 1912. It was occupied during the First World War and became a major American hospital in 1917. During the Second World War, it was taken over by the German army. After the war, it once again became a teacher training college until the early 1980s. Today, it houses a secondary school, the main entrance to which retains the pediment of the former teacher training college.
