Écluse de Boisseau

The Boisseau causeway has existed since at least the 15th century. It was used to power a mill on the left bank. To ensure the passage of boats on the upper Mayenne, a project to build a lock at Boisseau was drawn up in 1846 by the Ponts et Chaussées engineer Leblanc. It involved simply raising the dam, demolishing the mill and digging a small canal to access the lock. The work was awarded by tender on 27 March 1847 to Neuilly-le-Vendin contractors Victor Pelletier and Pierre Lebreton. The work was soon interrupted and resumed in 1852, based on a project modified by engineer E. Caillaux in 1850: the sluiceway was transferred to the abutment of the dam on the right bank. The construction, which was carried out on a contract basis, was practically complete by the end of 1853. The lock-keeper's house bears the date 1848 on the key to the arch of the door. A new mill was built on the right bank in 1860. The dam was rebuilt in 1881 to the plans of engineer Moreau by Laval contractor Joseph Vannier, selected by tender on 30 April 1880. The lock-keeper's house was extended in 1982.
