The Tour-aux-Fées aroused curiosity from the 18th century onwards. It was identified as a funerary monument by Camille Jullian, then as a temple by Pierre Térouanne.

This monument in Allonnes is one of the great public sanctuaries of the city of Le Mans. The cult of the god Mars Mullo has been documented in western Gaul.
The Gallic sanctuary is a rich repository from the end of the 5th century to the middle of the 1st century BC. At the end of the 1st century AD, the sanctuary was rebuilt according to the plan of the great religious monuments of Rome.
Work on the great temple lasted from 80 AD to 160 AD. The sanctuary was visited until the early 4th century AD.
