Maison de la Rivière

In the north of Anjou, 30 km from Angers, the Maison de la Rivière traces the history of navigation in the Maine basin.

The Maison de la Rivière gives a vivid account of a very ancient navigation system, the only one in France covering such a vast basin. For a thousand years it linked the historic provinces of Anjou and Maine.
This history is told to you by a passionate volunteer guide, who uses a wide range of objects and media to help you make the most of your visit: authentic parts of a porte marinière, a collection of objects, reconstructions, a 12-metre scale model showing the various developments on the rivers between the causeway and the mill, the porte marinière, the lock with its sluice and the flour mill, not forgetting the acoustic corridor that plunges you into the life of the riverside residents at the heart of the conflicts of interest that prevailed in the 19th century.
