CHATEAU GAILLARD

Château Gaillard (built in the 19th century) in Girouard is a neo-medieval building designed by Abbé Rouillon.

Address : Impasse du Château Gaillard
85150 LE GIROUARD
FRANCE

Presentation of: CHATEAU GAILLARD

This miniature fortress is the work of the parish priest Abbé Rouillon. Having arrived in the commune in 1865, the abbot had travelled to the Holy Land and brought back souvenirs of the architecture of the castles built at the time of the Crusades.
At the time, the presbytery was in need of consolidation, so Abbé Rouillon had the original idea of restoring the building and adding architectural features from another era.
The towers at the corners of the building and the false brick battlements around the perimeter are the original features of this former presbytery. The crosses formed by the brickwork are a reminder of the religious beliefs of the former inhabitants.

The municipality of Le Girouard has chosen to install the post office and one of the 10 libraries of the Réseau des Achards here, opting to make the most of this little architectural gem on a daily basis.
