Atelier Le Croc - Ancienne briqueterie
Exceptional former brickworks in Les Rairies
Welcome to the village of Les Rairies, where the tradition of making traditional terracotta tiles and tomettes lives on. For many years, this know-how has been used to maintain the traditional production of terracotta tiles and bricks in the small village of Les Rairies. It is the immense richness of the clay soil in the Pays Baugeois that has made this small village the landmark par excellence for terracotta manufacturers.
Terres Cuites Cailleau produced in 2 exceptional traditional brickworks:
the Cailleau workshop at 24 rue de Bazouges and the Le Croc workshop, listed as a Historic Monument, in rue du Croc. Its name comes from the tool used by the kiln-maker to hook the faggots for firing. The Le Croc brickworks is the only protected site in the commune and symbolises the rich past of small brickworks that once brought life to Les Rairies. The Le Croc workshop continued to produce authentic handmade terracotta tiles in 18th-century kilns and dryers.
The Atelier Le Croc is the only site in the village to be listed as a historic monument. This majestic and authentic former brickworks perpetuates the tradition of making terracotta tiles the old-fashioned way.
It is privately owned and currently closed to visitors.
