Église Sainte-Madeleine - Segré
The Madeleine church is a fine example of religious architecture in Anjou Bleu, overlooking the town of Segré and the river Oudon.
Dominating the town, this church is one of the most remarkable architectural examples of Anjou Bleu. Built in two phases during the 19th century by architects Dellêtre and Auguste Beignet, it illustrates the evolution of religious architecture at a time of strong population growth.Between 1890 and 1896, Auguste Beignet radically redesigned the building to meet the need for expansion. The church adopted an aesthetic that was seen as resolutely modern for its time, with a non-protruding transept, a single-bay choir, a semi-circular apse and harmonised volumes.
Inspired by the Italian Renaissance, the architecture is notable for its 30-metre-high dome, an emblematic feature that can be seen from afar. A building worth discovering to understand the artistic influences and urban history of the area.
