Eglise du Christ Sauveur
Atypical church in the Vauguyon district, south of Le Mans. This church combines precious materials such as copper and limestone with modern materials such as glass and concrete.
Christ-Sauveur church was built by architect Jean-Louis Lagrange in 1965 on a circular plan in the shape of a Greek amphitheatre. The choir is topped by a truncated bell tower in the shape of a flame that rises more than 25 metres into the sky. Inside, there are no columns to block the view of the high altar, to which all eyes turn. This is lit by a large skylight that catches the zenithal light, while the side walls, punctuated by discreet stained glass windows arranged in baffles, diffuse a more intimate light into the nave. The exterior façade is finished in shades of limestone; the copper used to cover the bell tower reinforces the impression of eternal fire. To the rear of the sanctuary are the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament with its stained glass windows designed by Guy Soleille, the baptistery and the sacristy.
