SAINT RACHOUX
Saint-Rachoux is the symbolic link between the town of Saint-Aignan de Grand Lieu and the lake.
As the gateway to the lake, Saint-Rachoux was a busy trading centre in the 19th century. The small canal running from the Saint-Rachoux fountain to the Boire de Mallet enabled trade to be organised with other ports on the Lac de Grand Lieu. This trade consisted mainly of foodstuffs (wheat, flour, wine, etc.), but also building materials such as wood, lime and cement.
This trade, a victim of better roads and the advent of railway lines, died out around 1940.
Saint-Rachoux was also a well-known place of pilgrimage in the 19th century. The water from its fountain was reputed to cure rickets and ringworm.
