From flint to sea bathing: The epic of Sainte-Marie-sur-MerA thousand years of history: Since prehistoric times, Sainte-Marie-sur-Mer has been a popular place to settle. Archaeological remains bear witness to continuous human occupation of the area.
The beginnings of a market town: It was in the 12th century, with the foundation of an abbey by the Canons of Saint-Augustin, that the first stones of today's market town were laid.
The seaside boom: Very small and closely linked to the monastic establishment, the town did not really develop until the 19th century with the advent of the seaside bathing craze.
