PONT DE CINQ PIERRES

This bridge, so called because of the number of stones that make it up, is of a very particular style that remains an enigma. It appeared on the old land register (it has disappeared from the new one) under the name of "planche du champ rousier" and was located on the local road from ST PAUL LE GAULTIER to la Pôoté (former name of ST PIERRE DES NIDS).

In the "cahiers de doléances" of 1789, the inhabitants of the commune protested against the lack of planks and bridges for pedestrians on the PRE EN PAIL and Pôoté roads. Could this be the result of a popular demand? It's a plausible hypothesis. In fact, it was built in 1833, and the date appears on the underside of one of the stones.
The gradual lowering of the bank beside the bridge suggests that it facilitated the passage of carters on dry land, while their teams crossed the river by fording.
