Mémorial des Déportés de la Sarthe

A place of remembrance to remember.

After several years of research by 17 associations to identify those deported from Sarthe during the Second World War, a memorial will be inaugurated in April 2019 in Le Mans to pay tribute to them. 1502 names appear on the monument.

1502 names, scratched on brushed steel plaques, on the bench surrounding the current Monument de la Résistance, place Aristide Briand in Le Mans. 1,098 were "repression" deportees, Resistance fighters, political deportees or common criminals. The remaining 404 were Jews persecuted and then deported by the Nazis during the Occupation. All were born, lived or were arrested in Sarthe.
