CIRCUIT DE VENELLES EN RUELLES PUYBELLIARD
The Puybelliard trail "de venelles en ruelles" ("from alleys to alleys") explores the history of this village from the 11th century to the French Revolution. This 1km family walk has fourteen illustrated panels and can be done on foot or by bike.
In the 15th century, Puybelliard was a flourishing commercial town, with fairs renowned throughout the region and as far afield as the Spanish border, attracting large numbers of people. Rue des Dames was the place to find those who practised "the oldest trade in the world". Rue des Venelles and Rue des Remparts are the oldest streets in Puybelliard. The tower is the only vestige of the 12th-century château de Puybelliard. Built by the Viscount of Thouars, it was used as a men's prison in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The church was originally just a chapel within the castle walls. In the 13th and 15th centuries, it underwent transformations: fortifications were added during the Hundred Years' War, giving it its massive appearance. In 1562, during the Wars of Religion, the building was ransacked.
The "Doué" wash-house and the Basque-inspired Maison des Tourelles are also on the route.
Family tour on foot or by bike, duration 1h30.
