Espace Naturel Sensible du Pierrier de la Vallée de Misère
The Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS) du Pierrier de la Vallée de Misère is an emblematic site in the Alpes Mancelles due to the rarity of this habitat. A trail will help you discover the richness of the stone quarry, as well as the surrounding moorland and woodland.
Designated a Sensitive Natural Area (ENS) in 2017 by the Sarthe Departmental Council, the Vallée de Misère scree is an important habitat for pioneer moss and lichen vegetation. It is also home to a number of reptiles and insects, including the two-striped lizard and the sock mygale, the only mygale in the Pays de la Loire region. This steep-sided valley, overlooked on either side by rocky bars and Armorican sandstone scree, also known as scree, dates back to the Quaternary period and is a unique site in the Pays de La Loire region. With its rich fauna, flora and, above all, geology, the Misère valley is sure to provide you with a complete change of scenery.
There are two ways to discover this site, located on Mont Narbonne, one of the two hills surrounding the village:
- follow the green hiking signs (Vallée de Misère trail)
- follow the "Geological stories" discovery trail set up by the Parc Naturel Régional and Géoparc Normandie Maine
Highly sensitive to human presence, the scree is not accessible to visitors. However, a viewpoint overlooking the scree and the valley will allow you to admire it without damaging it. Please keep to the path, pick up your rubbish, keep your dogs on a lead, do not use motorised vehicles and do not start fires.
