MUSEE MINES ET MINERAUX DE LA FERME DE L'ORME
This museum, devoted exclusively to French mineralogy, presents a collection of over 3,000 samples, divided into 240 species, in a unique setting, the reconstruction of a 19th-century mine. Open from 2pm to 6pm every afternoon in July and August, and on Wednesdays and Saturdays in winter.
Visitors will be able to discover the world of mining and the life of a miner, thanks to a collection of tools (picks, lamps, axes) and various minerals mined in the region. The various minerals used in industry and the history of all the mines in Loire-Atlantique will also be on display.
The museum aims to be a place where visitors can discover mineralogy, and to this end five educational display cases explain the science of mineralogy through visual examples. The collection, which is the largest presented by a private museum in France, has been classified by chemical order, according to the 9 recognised classes. Visitors can see well-known minerals such as quartz, gold, fluorite, magnetite and pyrite, as well as rarities such as lulzacite, a mineral extracted only from the Saint Aubin des Châteaux deposit in Loire-Atlantique, myniulite, stolzite and pyromorphite...
Visitors will also be able to take home a small souvenir, thanks to the shop, which offers a wide selection of French and foreign minerals, rolled stones, fossils and shells, from beginners' pieces to museum pieces.
