MANOIR DE PIERRE FONTAINE

Dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. A wide external stone stairway leads up to the dwelling, whose entrance is extended by a canopy with wooden pillars. An octagonal tower has narrow defensive openings.

The current dwelling was rebuilt in 1540 on earlier foundations by Jacques de Bouillé, the youngest son of a family well established locally in Chellé at the foot of Montaigu and at Le Rocher in Mézangers. This reconstruction was the result of the damage caused by the Hundred Years' War. In 1672, the fiefdom and seigneury of Pierre-Fontaine consisted of the seigniorial house, in which there were three main buildings, a tower in the said courtyard, an enclosed courtyard in which there was a chapel, a hayloft, dovecote and adjoining garden.

The building, with its porch and awning, has been restored to its former glory thanks to the current owners, Mr and Mrs Robert de Chièvres. Private property, not open to the public.
