CHATEAU DU FRESNE

Château du Fresne is a 16th-century castle in Champéon. Surrounded by a moat and an artificial pond, it has survived the centuries since the Middle Ages.

Dating from the 12th century, the castle retains features reminiscent of fortifications, such as the moat and the raised mound in the middle of the pond. The original dwelling remains discreet, with only a few clues such as chains, small bays and a semi-buried area indicating its medieval origins.

The dovecote and chapel are reminders of the seigneurial privileges. The dovecote, of Gascon origin, remains a mystery perched on the waters of the remarkably well-preserved Etang du Fresne. The chapel, with its stepped window and modest stonework, evokes images of the Middle Ages, even though it has been renovated over the centuries.

The addition of contemporary art brings the monument to life and keeps it constantly in motion. Gijs Stork and Angelo Tromp, who are passionate about art and culture, want to pay tribute to the past through the Domaine du Fresne, but also bring it to life by creating a cultural centre for contemporary art. They will host artists for exhibitions and residencies, concerts and live performances. Le Fresne will be a timeless destination where history, art and nature meet.

You can take a self-guided tour of the exterior on Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 6pm (free of charge).
