Le chalet Cardinal

At the beginning of the 20th century, when sea bathing became fashionable, many wealthy people had beautiful villas built with sea views. In 1907, Gustave Cardinal, an industrialist from Rezé, had his villa built by Nantes architect Etienne Coutan, who was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in 1902.

Gustave Cardinal was a municipal councillor in Moutiers-en-Retz and a friend of Etienne Coutan. This is why he entrusted him with the project management of his future villa, located on the dunes.

During the German occupation, the Chalet Cardinal was the headquarters of the Kommendatûr. In 1945, it became the headquarters of the liberation army.

Architectural features :
Set in the middle of a plot, this house has a view of the sea. It has a three-storey massed plan, enlivened by the volumes of the pavilion roof, pierced by two dormer windows covered with wood panelling on the side elevations and a gable on the east facade. The west elevation, facing the sea, has an additional storey covered by a pavilion roof resting on cylindrical pillars and embellished with gables. Brick is used for decorative purposes.
