EGLISE SAINT MÉLAINE

Church of Saint Mélaine and its statue of Saint Jacques de Compostelle

The church is of Gothic inspiration. This is particularly evident in the choir, with its low vaults supported by slender columns. The Gothic style is also evident in the red and gold colours and the ribbed windows. The pointed arches, clustered pillars, walls pierced with rose windows and the various individual statues (such as those of Santiago de Compostela or Saint Mélaine) found in the church are also characteristic of Gothic art. Inside the church is the 18th-century statue of Santiago de Compostela, located near the baptismal font. It was made of polychrome stone, i.e. stone of several colours. The statue is a reminder that the commune was a stopover for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
