CHAPELLE SAINT LÉONARD

St Léonard's chapel, built of rough local stone, features remnants of 17th-century wall paintings.

In the 11th century, the lord of Durtal wanted to extend the town beyond the Loir and called on the monks of St Serges d'Angers to build a bridge, a church, monastic buildings and an oven.

Built at the time of the first crusades, it became known as the "Tanners' Chapel" during the Renaissance.
The chapel has preserved its 11th-century structure and roof frame, and its 16th-century round-arched windows. The remains of 17th-century frescoes cover other frescoes probably dating from the 16th century.
Deconsecrated before the French Revolution, it was abandoned and used as a garage in the 1960s before restoration work began in the late 1980s. Major renovation work was carried out in 2016 and 2017, including repairing and insulating the roof, rebuilding the stonework, installing a bell tower and improving acoustics.

The chapel has been converted into a concert venue and residential studio for recording acoustic music.
