Chapelle de Garreau

The Chapelle de Garreau is located in La Chapelle-Hermier in a place known as "Le Garreau". It is the most popular pilgrimage centre in the lower Vendée. Louis XIII is said to have come here after his victory over the Protestants in Riez.
Legend has it that a monk saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary washing clothes in the waters of the Jaunay. The chapel was built in memory of this apparition.
A pilgrimage is held there on the first Sunday in September. Although attendance has dwindled considerably nowadays, up until the 1960s the pilgrimage drew faithful from all over the département.
