Heritage trail

Our region is overflowing with heritage treasures from the golden age of bluestone. It was widely used in the construction of wayside crosses: schist is present in 90% of the structures in Nozay.

A RESTORATION CAMPAIGN IN 2019
Around sixty crosses were erected in the commune between 1600 and 1950.
43 still exist, 40 of which were restored by José Teffo in 2019.

During the restoration work, very few of them revealed their secrets. The quarrymen and stonemasons left few traces, making it difficult to determine the age and name of these crosses.

PROMOTING SMALL-SCALE HERITAGE
To retrace their history, we had to glean information from a variety of sources and interview the owners of the crosses, their neighbours and other local residents.

25 interpretation panels have been installed around the crosses of particular interest. Take a journey back in time to discover these wayside crosses designed to guide travellers and protect families or crops.
