The Breton marsh is a protected natural area classified as "Natura 2000". It covers almost half of the town of Villeneuve en Retz.

Presentation of: Le Marais Breton Vendeen
Its total area is close to 450 km2.It covers a territory which extends from Moutiers en Retz to the forest of Monts and Machecoul.
In Villeneuve, the marsh is located to the south between the port of Collet and Fresnay. In the old days, it was covered by the sea and formed up to Noirmoutier the Gulf of Machecoul.
Many species of birds and animals live there according to the seasons; Avocets, egrets, cines, herons, nutria, ducks, raptors, harriers, storks ...
You can enter it on foot, on horseback and even by bicycle ... This area is recognized as a wetland of international importance (RAMSAR convention) for the protection of birds and in particular for their nesting.
