Presentation of: Jardin Dumaine

This 4-hectare garden, bequeathed to the town in 1872 by Pierre Hyacinthe Dumaine at the same time as the buildings that now house the town hall, is open to visitors free of charge in accordance with Mr Dumaine's wishes.
The allée des Ifs leading to the Théâtre de Verdure dates back to 1830. A few steps away, an octagonal pool and bandstand, built in 1907 thanks to Julien David, provide a refreshing and welcoming space for visitors. A little further down, you'll find a pond, grotto and rockeries. A bend in the path leads to a wide lawn decorated with topiary, some of which depicts some of La Fontaine's Fables. An orangery completes the picture.
Trees of note, trees in rows, shrubs, perennials and annual flowers are the garden's charming features.
Throughout the year, the garden is the scene of numerous events.
Named after Pierre Hyacinthe Dumaine, who bequeathed this property to Luçon: his house to establish the Town Hall and the land to turn it into a free public garden. In 4.5 hectares of greenery, it alternates between French and English gardens, a pond, a belvedere, a fountain, woods, coppice and topiary.
Pierre Hyacinthe Dumaine was born on 2 June 1790. He studied medicine in Paris, but more than just being a doctor, he worked to improve living conditions throughout the Luçon region. The park features a number of different elements: firstly, a regular garden on the east side, in line with the town hall and the monument to Pierre-Hyacinthe Dumaine; it includes a yew avenue pruned into topiary, a theatre of greenery, quincunxes and a bower; then, an irregular garden to the south-west, with an octagonal pool and a fountain, a bandstand and a belvedere overlooking the landscaped garden.
This garden includes a landscaped garden with winding paths, a pond, a rustic bridge, an artificial grotto with a waterfall, a snail and a water tower, a star-shaped wood and finally a large lawn with topiary beds representing the fables of La Fontaine and, along the allée Saint-François, an orangery.
