Day 1 : Around Saint-Léonard-des-Bois, between secret valleys and panoramic views
Morning: Saint-Léonard-des-Bois, a village between river and cliffs
Start your adventure in Saint-Léonard-des-Bois, a village nestled in a meander of the Sarthe River. Stroll through the narrow streets lined with houses built of roussard sandstone, the sand-colored stone that gives character to the local architecture. Leaving the village, climb to the heights of Mont Narbonne for a spectacular view of the entire valley. On one side, the meandering course of the Sarthe River; on the other, the majestic scree of Haut Fourché. In this life-size panorama, you'll understand why this region is nicknamed the "Alpes Mancelles".
Afternoon: in the heart of the Vallée de Misère
In the afternoon, explore the Vallée de Misère, a fascinating and little-known geological site. Formed several million years ago, this scree is unique in the Pays de la Loire region. The rocky bars and scree of Armorican sandstone create a lunar landscape, where mosses and lichens cling valiantly. Follow the path that winds up the hillside. The contrast between raw rock and tenacious vegetation tells the story of a resilient and surprising nature.
For your evening, join us at the Domaine du Gasseau. In summer, the site regularly hosts concerts and exhibitions (ask at reception for details of the cultural program). Settle in for the night in one of the estate's rooms, or opt for nearby accommodation.
Day 2 : Discover historic villages between Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei and Fresnay-sur-Sarthe
Morning: Saint-Cénéri-le-Gérei, one of France's most beautiful villages
Join us in the morning at Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei. Classified as one of France's most beautiful villages, Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei looks like something out of an Impressionist painting. It's no coincidence that many painters set up easels here in the 19th century. Cross the small stone bridge over the Sarthe, marking the border between Normandy and Pays de la Loire.
In the heart of the village, the 11th-century Romanesque church welcomes you, perched on its rocky outcrop. Continue your walk to the Petit Saint-Céneri chapel, nestled in a meadow. A spring gushes out here, reputed to be miraculous according to local legend.
Afternoon: the verdant Toyères canyon and the hilltop town of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe
In the afternoon, head for the Toyères canyon. Rent a canoe or kayak and glide along the calm waters of the Sarthe. The river reveals a whole new perspective on the Alpes Mancelles. Dragonflies escort you in an aerial ballet.
To round off your stay in style, head for Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, voted France's second most beautiful village in 2021. Perched on a rocky outcrop, this Petite Cité de Caractère offers exceptional panoramic views over the valley. Don't miss the Bourgneuf district, with its old weavers' houses lining the river. Then climb up to the remains of the castle, where you can gaze down on the winding Sarthe and the slate roofs glistening in the fading sunlight.
