In the middle of the forest, walkers will come across a commemorative cross. This Vendéen memorial cross commemorates a tragic event in the Vendée War. In 1794, Republican soldiers went to the village of Puiset and massacred around thirty of its inhabitants. However, some of them managed to escape into the forest of Leppo. They included adults, but also many children, some of them very young. The forest was set on fire to drive out the fugitives, who were killed at the edge of the forest. In all, 56 people perished between 12 and 14 March 1794.
