Église Notre Dame de l'Annonciation

Small and rustic, with a squat, ancient bell tower, the church in the Chapelle-Achard district is one of the oldest in the region.

Its origins date back to the 11th century, when Lord Etienne Achard de Mota decided to create a new village and had a chapel built.
Damaged during the Wars of Religion and the Revolution, the church has nevertheless retained its original choir, which is the oldest in the Achards region.

Built of ashlar with a barrel vault, it is lit by five round-arched windows. Three stained glass windows in the choir depict important scenes from the Catholic faith: the first shows Joan of Arc at the moment of her first call. The second depicts Mary and the angel Gabriel. The third shows the angel Gabriel with a spear and a blue sword, killing a demon.

The nave, burnt down by Protestants in 1568, was rebuilt in the 17th century. In 1864, the architect Joseph Libaudière from La Roche-sur-Yon had heavy buttresses placed on the outside of the church to support the walls, which were giving way under the pressure of the vaults.
