The Romanesque stepped chevet, built during the 12th century, is the most remarkable part of the building. The choir is surrounded by an ambulatory opening onto 5 radiating chapels. The foundations date from the first half of the 12th century.

The capitals of the ambulatory bear witness to the various regional influences that went into their construction.

Notre Dame d'Avesnières was elevated to the rank of Basilica in 1898.
Also worth seeing: remarkable statuary (14th-century Virgin Mary, 14th-century Christ, monumental 16th-century St Christopher), 17th-century altarpiece from Laval, 15th- and 20th-century triptychs.
