Parc du Château du Verger
Discover the remains of one of the most beautiful castles built at the end of the 15th century!
Open to the public, outside the buildings, from 15 August to 30 September, every day except Sunday, from 2.30 pm to 8.30 pm (you can see some very beautiful westerly lights at the end of the day).Self-guided tour with printed documents on the history and architecture of the château and on the major historical events in which the château's inhabitants have been involved since the fifteenth century.
It was in the Fortified House of Le Verger, owned by Pierre de Rohan Guéméné, Marshal of France known as "the Marshal of Gié", that the Treaty of Le Verger was negotiated, which put an end to the war between Brittany and France in 1488 and led to the marriage of Anne of Brittany to Charles VIII, King of France, in 1491.
Between 1492 and 1506, the Maréchal de Gié had one of the finest châteaux built in the late 15th century built on this site.
But less than three hundred years later, between 1776 and 1783, Cardinal de Rohan had most of the castle, which had suffered from poor maintenance, demolished and all the materials salvaged sold.
However, part of the entrance châtelet and the two buildings in the forecourt, each flanked by a powerful defensive tower, were spared and can still be seen today from the road. The gigantic moat that once encircled the whole complex and the foundations of the four corner towers of the old castle also remain.
The whole complex is listed as a Historic Monument.
The tour follows the outer perimeter of the moat, allowing visitors to appreciate the façades of the two buildings and the scale of the original structure, the remains of which can still be seen.
You can also take a stroll through part of the park, which is currently being restored, through a small wood close to the old château, or extend your walk by going into the Boudré forest outside the château.
