Le lieu d'où l'on admire

In the Pays d'art et d'histoire du Perche Sarthois, this trail takes in the Petite Cité de Caractère of Montmirail, the Percheron bocage and its heritage.

Knowledge of Montmirail dates back to the 10th and 11th centuries, when this land, owned by the Bishop of Chartres, was granted to the Gouët family to defend it from Norman incursions. The Gouets built a motte castle at the most strategic location, which soon became a small fortified town. Thus Mons Mirabilis, "the mountain from which we admire", emancipated itself to become the head of the barony of Montmirail, one of the five that formed the independent entity of Perche Gouët in the 16th century, named after the first known lords.

Map and full description of the route available in the Guide Rando du Perche Sarthois (50 routes).
